![]() The Manual Motorcycle Chain Lubrication System
|
At 18,000 miles the chain was worn out and had to be replaced. During this time, 15 cans of Aerosol chain lube were used at £2.99 per can.
Total money spent: £44.85. Total time spent: 7hrs 30mins.
A new and identical chain and sprocket set was fitted, along with a prototype (single sided) LoobMan chainoiler unit. The LoobMan unit was used to supply a little oil to the chain when needed, (in this instance a three second squirt was given once or twice a day). Altogether, a total of one and a quarter litres of ordinary 10-40 engine oil (at £3.99 per litre) was used.
This time the chain ran for 27,000 miles - a 50% increase in chain life!
Total money spent: £4.31. Total time spent: 27mins.
However, this test proved only that oil is better than spray for a motorcycle chain. The tested chain wore out because the o-rings on the unfed side were not being properly lubricated. This set Loobman on a quest to develop the special Loobman D.S.D. (Dual sided delivery) in order to feed the o-rings on the other side.
In 1997 Loobman introduced the first commercially available dual sided oil delivery system. The D.S.D. now comes as a standard component and makes the Loobman chainoiler highly efficient but at a fraction of the cost of other units.
